NEWS/STOCKING UPDATES: Dixon Lake’s final trout plants of the season two weeks ago. Other lakes getting their final plants of the year that same week were Jennings, Poway, and Wohlford.

Lake Cuyamaca is slated to get trout plants May 22 and Jun. 15, and it was planted last week.

Santee Lakes has had catfish plant two and four weeks ago, and should get fish again this week.

At the San Diego City Lakes, Barrett is still closed for the season, but should be opening soon.

FISHING UPDATE: The bass bite has been good across the board with the warm weather and fish advancing through the spawn (mostly just males protecting nests in shallow). The bite is best on small plastics and reaction baits. Lower Otay, San Vicente, and El Capitan are the top bets with very good action, but Sutherland is nearly as good. Murray and Hodges are several notches behind but also pretty decent for anglers targeting the bass.

The bluegill and redear action is kicking into high gear, especially at Lower Otay, but also at San Vicente, El Capitan, and Sutherland. Hodges is also starting to perk. The crappie action has really dropped off with very few fish reported at any of the lakes over the past week except Hodges.

The trout bite had slowed way down with the warm weather at all the lakes with no plants in a couple of weeks at most, but the cool snap has improved things a little on the holdovers.

The catfish are still getting very light pressure right now so there have been few reports.

FISH COUNTS: The San Diego City Lakes staff usually conducts counts each week at its reservoirs. At El Capitan, 42 anglers checked reported 206 bass, 31 bluegill, and nine blue catfish. At Hodges, 87 anglers had 21 bass, 10 bluegill, six channel cats, and two crappie. At Miramar, 25 anglers reported 74 bass to four pounds. At San Vicente, 228 anglers reported 502 bass to seven pounds and 110 bluegill. At Sutherland, 51 anglers reported 229 bass.
